Horizen Unveils Developer Funding Initiative
Horizen, a blockchain protocol dedicated to privacy and established in 2017, has announced a significant developer funding initiative that will span five years. The program will allocate 1 million ZEN tokens, equivalent to approximately $7.4 million at current prices, to support applications on its forthcoming Layer 3 network that is compatible with Base. Thrive Protocol, which oversees over $70 million in funding across prominent blockchain ecosystems, will manage this initiative.
Funding Focus on Privacy Technology
This initiative represents a major advancement in Horizen’s dedication to developing privacy technology. The funding will concentrate on four primary sectors: confidential financial services (40% of the total funding), privacy-focused artificial intelligence and machine learning (30%), gaming platforms that incorporate verifiable randomness (20%), and decentralized governance systems (10%). Individual projects are expected to receive funding between $50,000 and $100,000 in ZEN tokens, with disbursements tied to confirmed project milestones rather than initial promises.
Transitioning from Privacy Coin to Ecosystem Builder
Horizen is transitioning from its inception as a privacy coin in 2017 to a broader ecosystem aimed at privacy-centric applications. Unlike conventional funding models that provide upfront capital, Horizen’s program is designed to release funds progressively, contingent on demonstrable project progress: 10% upon acceptance, 20% at the deployment of the mainnet, 30% after achieving early traction, and the final 40% following a tenfold increase in usage.
Long-term Commitment to Privacy Solutions
The launch of this funding initiative coincides with a rising interest in privacy-preserving technologies within the blockchain space. According to a survey conducted by Consensys, 83% of participants indicated that data privacy is crucial to them, while 78% expressed a desire for greater control over their online identities. Such concerns are particularly significant in sectors like finance and AI, where maintaining data privacy is critical.
Governance and Oversight of the Initiative
This funding program reflects Horizen’s focus on sustainable ecosystem growth rather than immediate token distribution. It will utilize previously allocated tokenomics instead of introducing new tokens, thereby upholding the project’s commitment to a maximum supply of 21 million ZEN tokens established during its fair launch. An advisory board consisting of seven members, all contributors to Horizen, will supervise the program, ensuring a focus on ecosystem benefits rather than individual interests. Projects seeking funding must prioritize user privacy and security while fostering substantial on-chain activity.
Launch Timeline and Community Control
The funding initiative is set to launch in the third quarter of 2025, aligning with the deployment of Horizen’s Layer 3 mainnet. The Horizen community will retain governance rights, including the authority to terminate the program via a DAO vote, which includes a six-month period for ongoing projects to wind down.
Statements from Leadership
“Addressing the challenge of incentivizing development in web3 has been apparent for some time,” remarked Rob Viglione, CEO of Horizen Labs. “Attracting and keeping talent is a difficult task, especially when a clear path to sustainable funding is lacking. Our funding initiative of 1 million ZEN in collaboration with Thrive is a substantial advancement in this regard. It ensures builders are compensated for their contributions and the applications they develop. We believe this strategy will ultimately benefit privacy within the Web3 landscape.”
“Achieving privacy is a marathon, not a sprint; it requires consistent effort and real teams delivering tangible products,” stated Daniel Jacobs, CEO of Thrive. “Our partnership with Horizen is a natural fit. The Horizen community’s long-standing dedication to privacy aligns perfectly with Thrive’s approach to funding projects that validate their worth at each stage. We are committed to fostering the Horizen ecosystem and supporting builders who are making privacy a tangible aspect of on-chain experiences.”
About Horizen
Horizen is a modular, privacy-centric platform aimed at making advanced privacy technologies, including zero-knowledge proofs and trusted execution environments, widely accessible for web applications. Initially launched in 2017 as a non-ICO project with a fair launch, Horizen is now evolving with the introduction of Horizen 2.0, a next-generation Layer 3 appchain deployed on Base, which is the Ethereum Layer 2 solution developed by Coinbase. Horizen 2.0 enhances performance, privacy, and scalability for developers creating applications that prioritize privacy and compliance, while significantly lowering costs and latency.
About Thrive Protocol
Thrive is pioneering the proof of value (POV) consensus mechanism, which optimizes the crypto funding process. Its decentralized network of expert reviewers assesses when value is effectively created at critical milestones, enhancing the efficiency of fundraising and capital allocation. Thrive collaborates with prominent blockchain networks, including Polygon, Arbitrum, XION, ApeCoin, and Hedera, to support builders who are delivering impactful solutions in the crypto space.
